Review by Camila Tartari

History Will Absolve Me, the latest album by Billy Woods, is a powerful and thought-provoking work of art that delves into the complexities of life and society. The album is a reflection of Woods' experiences and observations, and it presents a raw and unfiltered perspective on the world around us.

At its core, History Will Absolve Me is a political album that addresses issues such as police brutality, racism, and inequality. However, it is also a deeply personal album that explores Woods' own struggles and emotions. The lyrics are dense and multilayered, and they require careful attention to fully appreciate.

Musically, the album is a blend of hip-hop, jazz, and experimental sounds. The beats are often minimalistic, but they provide a solid foundation for Woods' lyrics to shine. The guest appearances from artists like Elucid, Quelle Chris, and Aesop Rock add depth and variety to the album.

This album was being complete perfection, even in this song and the ones after. The lyrics are insane, the production is abstract but extremely hard hitting. Everything just works. So why, why did the feature here just had to have a homophobic line? I mean are you fucking kidding me. A single like, a single fucking line is preventing this album from being an absolute 10/10

[Verse 1]
I stand in this booth in a moment we call now
At the same time, pedaling to school as a child
Under a canopy of jacarandas, it ain't change much
Colorful trees still surround us, L's get touched
Baby-faced, staring out the window of a school bus
Twenty years later, same wistful look but shackled up
Bearded down, momma kissed his forehead good luck
Tears anoint the crown
He lied to her anyway and toasted that night over pounds
Sterling, whispers in whirlwinds
Polaroid pictures, edges curling
At the auction
The contents of one storage space, sight unseen, going once
Sixteen, seventeen, cracking Philly Blunts
Half the smarts, but twice the heart
Look at the picture, eyes had a spark
Sputtering, at the bar mutterin'
Money comes and goes
Broke today, but tomorrow who knows?
Ten years ago she was just some hoe
Five years after that, I'm in love
And if you asked me today, I could give a fuck
Go figure

[Hook x4]
Ahhhhh

[Verse 2]
Sorry I ain't make the wake, yeah I know
A dollar short and 24 hours late
Trying to live my whole life in '98
Your moms watchin' me clean my plate
But there ain't no seconds
I'm at the ATM emptying my checking
I'm eleven years old firing a weapon
Dad's hand on my shoulder, smoke in my nose
Got older, went from chocolate to dro
Now if it ain't flight, it's a no go
Bigger, Faster, Stronger
I seen old friends start working with the po-po
Just goes to show
I could go back tell myself everything I know
But me at 23 would probably shrug a shoulder
Put stoge to fire like you're preaching to the choir
V-Mega was spitting through the wire
Like, don't even wet that
It ain't about no get-back
We doing digits on Route 90
Late for your wedding
Sitting in the morning sun with that good Otis Redding

[Outro]
Th-th-th-this music
Th-th-this music
I-i-is so much
I-i-is so much bigger than me
B-b-b-bigger than me
B-b-bigger than me
Th-th-th-this music
Th-th-this music

Billy Woods.. I am 50 years old ..first generation hip hop.. what I love about your music is the fact that it's real poetry..not just rhyming words or punch lines..NO the majority of this is poetry...spoken word over beats that make you think and connect the links with room at times to come to my on conclusion and a understanding perhaps a small bit different than what you intended and that cool ..3 different ppl with 3 different explanations of what you were really saying and all 3 are write ..that's fucking poetry..your music makes me think and Sparks deep thought over thought pervoking instrumentals..you are now my favorite rapper.. can't believe it took me so long to find this..but guess bc your music demands the use of brain cells and critical thinking skills.. ..wow..all I can say bruh...my girl is going to love it

This is seriously my favorite billy woods songs, maybe even hip hop songs in general. It's a shame that this track is so overlooked.
Billy Woods' best track in my opinion, but I gotta admit it's for the most part because of the beautiful beat, that really made this track stand out from his other songs, too good too even handle... Shoutout to Willie Green.

Given the ironic cover, the droopy lyrics and the downtuned beat I guess this is a conscious song. I'm gonna have to crawl up in fetal position naked and listen to it before I make a proper judgement
